Chilce is a traditional women's headdress worn by Ukrainian women, especially in the Carpathians and the Hutsul region.
Description and meaning
A chilce is a narrow strip of fabric, usually woven or embroidered, that fits the forehead and is tied or fastened at the back of the head. It could be decorated with beads, metal inserts, tassels or beads.
Functions of a chilce
1. Decoration - it emphasized the beauty of a woman, complementing a festive or wedding outfit.
2. Amulet - it was believed that embroidered or woven patterns protect against the evil eye.
3. Social status - married women had a different headdress, and a girl's chilce symbolized youth and unmarried status.
Decorative elements
A chilce could be decorated with geometric or floral ornaments.
Additional elements, such as tassels or bells, added dynamism and expressiveness.
This element of traditional clothing is still used today in stage costumes, at festivals and weddings.
