The 8-end cross so-called «Maltese» served as a symbol of the Knights Hospitallers. The ends of the cross had their value, they indicated 8 covenants of Knights. Since ancient times it was believed that this amulet is a symbol of unity of the four earth elements: earth and fire, air and water. Also, the symbol reveals the relationship of time and space, energy and information. Sometimes a crucifix of a person is depicted on the Maltese cross, which symbolizes his mission to listen and follow God's will. In addition, many believe that the Maltese cross is a sign of human harmony with the world.
Hutsul masters often create zgardas in the form of Maltese crosses with the crucifix. This zgarda is made by one of the most prominent Hutsul «mosjazhnik» Orest Oniskiv, who owns a skillful craftsmanship in artistic carving and casting. Zgarda ЗБ 01-11» (4х4сm) is made of bronze by casting method under the home conditions. The handcraft is minted and engraving.
