In the old days bronze crosses were very popular. There were times when such crosses cost a lot of money, and not everyone could afford, as they were brought from Byzantium. The tradition of casting crosses of bronze existed in the Hutsul region. Today masters, preserving the ancient technology of baptismal crosses, continue the work of their great-grandfathers, cast bronze articles under the home conditions.
It is in this way the cross on this page is made. It has small dimensions (2х1,5 сm) and cast in bronze, then minted. Further steps of the master consist in engraving and stringing the handcraft on the ceramic coral. In the photo you can see how the handcraft looks in finished form. We note that the shape of the cross and its finishing are very ancient. Applied ornament is pre-Christian. Previously the cross with so unusual shape was given the child to the first communion.
The authorship of the work belongs to Orest Oniskiv. He inherited the skill of artistic carving from his grandfather – the famous Ukrainian artisan, honored master of Ukrainian folk art Roman Strinadyuk.
